George Granger presents the East Bay Vison Award to Bill Lockyer
William Westwood "Bill" Lockyer’s varied executive and legislative experience is unique in State Government. He has served in both legislative chambers and two Constitutional offices. The current California Treasurer, Lockyer’s public service career has spanned nearly four decades. From 1999-2006, he served as California Attorney General. Prior to his election as Attorney General in 1998, Lockyer served 25 years in the California Legislature, first in the Assembly from 1973 to 1982 representing the 14th District and then in the Senate from 1982 until 1998. He culminated his Capitol career as Senate President pro Tempore the last four years of his term.

In 1987, the Legislature passed Lockyer’s bill
creating the Bay Trail, envisioned to eventually be
a 500-mile-long hiking and cycling path and
continuous recreational corridor with adjacent
bayshore parks and protected natural habitats that
would entirely encircle San Francisco and San Pablo
Bays. Requiring city, county and regional
cooperation, the Bay Trail marked its 20th year in
2009 and currently has more than 300 miles open to
hikers, bicyclists, joggers and walkers.
