Working in the East Bay

Diversity is also the strength of the East Bay’s economic base as it continues to provide well paying jobs to its residents and offers an economic stability that is much less volatile than the more specialized economies of San Jose (electronics) and San Francisco (tourism).

The East Bay has a very strong high-tech industrial base, particularly in southern and southeastern Alameda County -- the area that composes the northeastern portion of Silicon Valley – and drug development, medical devices, software, telecommunications, information technology and other knowledge-based companies can be found throughout the East Bay taking advantage of the excellent access to housing and workers. Bioscience companies that initially grew out of Berkeley, Emeryville or South San Francisco are also finding homes along the I-80/880 and I-680 corridors. Among the over 150 such companies in the East bay, global life science concerns such as Bayer, Roche, Amgen, Johnson and Johnson, Abbott Laboratories and Novartis all have major facilities here. A strong representation of more traditional manufacturing provides balance to the economic base. The East Bay is home to the only major automobile manufacturer in the western United States, New United Motor Manufacturing, Inc.; Gillig, the bus manufacturer; Breda, an international rail car manufacturer; and Chevron, the nation’s second largest integrated energy company. These companies along with machine shops, plastic injection molding companies, contract manufacturers, industrial equipment manufactures, food processors, and other industrial concerns provide the stable, industrial backbone of the East Bay as well as the Bay Area.

The East Bay also offers a variety of office, retail, industrial, light industrial, warehouse and R&D space that is more affordable than San Francisco and closer to a much larger portion of the Bay Area’s workforce. For this reason many large software, multimedia and telecommunication companies have established large campuses in the eastern part of the East Bay.
